Makeup

  • Look natural, wear your normal evening or special occasion makeup. Apply makeup as you would if you were going to a formal occasion in the evening. In other words, using a bit more than you would during the day. Just try to avoid being stage made up.
  • Especially heavy make up tend to be more obvious in a portrait and may detract from the person.
  • Pay special attention to your eyes, as they will be the most important part of your portrait.
  • Use eye shadow to bring out eyes. Eye shadow should be a lighter color to bring your eyes forward. Light colored shadow above and below the eye will not come out well in a photograph.
  • An extra coat of mascara will make your lashes appear larger and fuller.
  • Lip-gloss adds a sparkle and is highly recommended.
  • Blemishes can be minimized with a cover stick or concealer.
  • Be careful when applying foundation, it should be well blended and as natural as possible. You do not want your face to be one color and your upper body another. Make sure there is no demarcation, or sudden lines where make-up stops and starts.
  • Use enough powder-base for a matte finish to avoid any shiny or oily appearance on your face.
  • Intense color will take away from the subjects face and draw the eye to the make-up.
  • Don't forget your necessities...makeup, hair brush, hair spray, etc. in an easily transported handbag. Too much lugging around of items, really takes the fun out of changing scenes. Back to Top

Body Hair

  • If you plan to get your hair cut, have hair cuts at least one week before your session. Hair cuts which have grown out for a few days will make for a better portrait.
  • You may make hair changes during the session, although accessories such as hats are a more effective use of time.
  • Clean hair makes a healthy appearance, just-washed hair may appear frizzy.
  • Don’t experiment with new hairstyles the day of your session.
  • Hair near and around the face can give dramatic shadowing which will take away from any portrait.
  • The best style should be simple and away from the face and forehead to allow the light to enhance the facial features.
  • Be sure to shave shortly before the portrait session to avoid any embarrassing body hair.
  • When shaving to take all precautions to avoid red bumps, irritation, and razor associated problems.
  • Hairspray helps loose ends, so don’t forget to bring yours along. Back to Top

Sun Exposure

  • Please avoid heavy sun exposure a few days before your session. Sunburns and peeling noses cannot be retouched. Back to Top

Glasses

  • People who wear glasses will probably want to do so in their portraits, because eyeglasses are a part of an individuals' personality. But you may want to consider some pictures with and some pictures without your glasses. Remember It is a personal decision as to whether or not you chose to wear glasses for your portrait.
  • Some of the glare, should it occur, can be corrected.
  • Consider bringing simple non-prescription glasses or remove the lenses completely, if your glasses tend to create distortion on your face. Certain prescriptions can also make the size or shape of your eyes appear distorted.
  • Tinted glasses will photograph slightly darker than they appear in real life, and may cause uncorrectable shadowing that ruins a great photo.
  • It is very difficult to remove some glare once a photo is produced so it may be best to avoid it entirely by removing your glasses.
  • If wearing frames without lenses is not an options for you, we can try to adjust lighting to minimize glare.
  • The appearance of the eye itself is different when seen through lenses. Back to Top
